Whenever people see the symbol for peace, the meaning is commonly understood. But why do we agree that these specific lines dividing up a circle carry the message of peace? In 1958, designer Gerard Holtom superimposed the handheld flag symbols, or semaphores, for N and D onto each other to create the design calling for nuclear disarmament. With knowledge comes power; power to the peaceful, and now more that ever this message rings true.
